Find IP & MAC Addresses in Windows?

A system might contain more than one network adapters, which could either an Ethernet or a Wi-Fi adapter and hence, a system might have multiple MAC and IP addresses. Here is a simplistic way to find the IP (Internet Protocol) address and the MAC (Media Access Control) address of your Microsoft Windows 10 computer.

How do you find the MAC and IP Addresses in Windows 10?

To locate the IP and MAC address in your Windows 10 system for either your Ethernet or your Wi-Fi interfaces, follow the steps which are outlined below:

  1. From Windows Settings, navigate to the Network and Internet section.
  2. Select the adapter whose IP address you are looking at and choose the Connection type.
  3. For Wi-Fi interfaces, click on the Wi-Fi menu item and select the Advanced Options link at the bottom of the menu of wireless networks. Go to Properties section, which shows the IP and the physical address or MAC address. In the case of Ethernet interfaces, click on the Ethernet menu item and then select the Connected icon. The IP and Physical addresses are available from the Properties section.

Find MAC & IP Addresses in Windows 7/8/8.1

The following steps will help you find the IP and MAC address in the 7, 8, and 8.1 versions of Windows:

  1. Click Start menu and select Control Panel on Windows 7. Alternatively, for Windows 8 or 8.1, select Control Panel from the list of Start Apps.
  2. From the Control Panel open the Network And Sharing Center.
  3. Go to the View your Active Networks section and click the link associated with the connection you want to explore. The link is usually in blue. Alternatively, you can click on the menu link on the left, which reads Change Adapter Settings and then right-click the corresponding network connection. The basic displays of the selected network connection are available from a pop-up window.
  4. Now click the Details button. You will see a Network Connection Details window with the Physical Address, IP Address, and associated parameters.

Get IP Address and MAC on Older Windows Versions

The steps below indicate precisely how you can view the MAC and IP address on systems running Windows XP or earlier versions:

  1. On the Windows taskbar, first, click Start and then tap on Run.
  2. Type winipcfg in the textbox and press the Return key. You will be able to see the IP address for the network adapter, which is shown at the IP Address field, and MAC Address which is shown at the MAC Address field. To obtain address information for other network adapters, use the drop-down menu available near the top of the window.

Ensure that you select the right adapter before displaying the IP address. Computers which have emulation software or VPN (Virtual Private Network) software installed, have more than one Virtual Adapter. In Virtual Adapters, the MAC addresses which have been emulated by the software are displayed rather than the actual physical addresses belonging to the network interface card. Virtual Addresses are not the actual Internet addresses and are private addresses.

To display the address information for all network adapters, use the ipconfig utility, which works from the Command Line interface. The ipconfig is a versatile tool and eliminates the need for navigating through multiple menus and clicking various items. Ipconfig can be initiated from the Windows Run menu option available from the Start menu. Accurately enter the following command after opening the Run windows

ipconfig /all

Irrespective of the Windows version, ensure that the right address for the appropriate network is accessed. Adapters used with Virtual Private Networks, which are Virtual Adapters, will display the Private IP as opposed to the actual Internet address. Also, it is to be noted that MAC addresses have been emulated by the software. These are attached to Virtual Adapters rather than the physical addresses of the Network Interface Card.
